Skull Base Board

Skull Base Board

In recent decades, close cooperation between the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, in the field of skull base surgery has laid the foundation for the establishment of a separate Skull Base Board, which is organised by both departments.

The board was officially established in 2010. Held every 14 days at the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy, these interdisciplinary meetings bring together representatives from Neurosurgery, Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy, Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, Oncology and  Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.

The Skull Base Board presents and discusses 6-8 patients per board meeting with lesions of the skull base, predominantly tumors - from common to rare tumor entities - but also vascular lesions, traumatic changes and congenital malformations.
The aim is to define an individually tailored, personalized treatment plan in interdisciplinary discussion and cooperation and to provide this to the patient as soon as possible, as well as to implement new treatment options. The surgical procedure is then also carried out in a correspondingly interdisciplinary manner.

Another aim of the Skull Base Board is to implement the scientific processing of results and the development of new treatment strategies in the treatment plan to optimize treatment procedures. Therefor the Scientific Working Group for Skull Base Surgery and Neurotraumatology maintains a lively international exchange with a number of recognized skull base centers and clinics worldwide.
